Java VMs and -XX:NewRatio
Interesting that the default -XX:NewRatio values can be so off.
I set it to 5 and the result is that the VM’s size is super-constant at 50 MB and there’s very little garbage collection activity.
Before, the VM size was increasing to well over 120 MB and there was insane GC activity.
In other words, you can have a smaller VM and less GC if you configure the GC just right.
media.io, my application to Convert Audio Online, runs fine in Tomcat with -Xms20M -Xmx40M -XX:NewRatio=1. johannburkard.de and my DataMatrix Generator run in an Orion set to -Xms50M -Xmx70M -XX:NewRatio=1 which also works extremely well at keeping the Garbage Collection Frequency low.

Ant oddities
Turns out you can have an explicit classpath only for Ant and still load JARs from somewhere else.
-nouserlib to the rescue.

Profiling Velocity with Blojsom.
Java upgrade
Just did a Java upgrade from 1.4.2_10 to 1.5.0_12.
At first I thought “man, this is slow.” Pages took 5 seconds to render.
Then I noticed that the VM was just warming up. Doh.
Also I’m now using 20 MB -Xmx more as well as -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC.
That i-cms thing looks interesting.

Johann
Heute hab ich einen großen Sprung beim Ranking für “Johann” gemacht. Und zwar von 41 auf 17.
Genau das, was ich will.
Bezeichnend, daß sich in Live für “Johann” gar nichts tut.

Ich dachte, es wäre lustig zu versuchen, für Johann zu ranken.
Letztens habe ich angefangen, Blogs mit “Johann” zu kommentieren, was mein Ranking bei G von ~65 auf ~45 verbessert hat.
Trotzdem sind die SERPs für Johann reichlich daneben, bei G kommt die erste lebendige Person auf Platz 6, bei Yahoo! und Live irgendwo um #10 rum. Deprimierend.
